About Danes Cottage

Where you’ll be

Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom

Enjoy the history, art and culture of our beautiful city, right on your doorstep.

Lincoln Castle is a few minutes walk uphill and houses a spectacular visitors centre where you can view one of the few remaining original copies of The Magna Carta, walk round the castle walls for magnificent views of the city and experience life in a Victorian prison.

Lincoln’s Norman Cathedral is well worth a visit for it’s architecture, try to find the famous imp.

The Collection Museum, Usher Art Gallery, and the Victorian Theatre Royal are easily within walking distance.

Our local professional Football Team, Lincoln City (The Imps) has had an upturn in fortunes of late, and is a 30 minute walk from the cottage.

There are numerous shops, cafes, lively bars and restaurants from independent offerings in the Bailgate area to national chains near the university and Waterfront.

There is a well stocked Tesco Express within a five minute walk, and the large supermarkets are a short drive away, or offer a delivery service.

Getting around

Our cottage is located a short distance from the City’s transport hub for easy access to trains and buses.
Numerous taxi companies operate within the city for reasonable fares.
Public car parks are available – as described above, however there is no parking at the property but we will provide a parking voucher for one car for each night of your stay

Lincoln Cathedral became the tallest building in the world in 1300, passing the Great Pyramid, when the spire on the central tower was raised (see above). It held that title until 1549 when the spires collapsed during a storm.

The city was of great importance at this time, being the capital of England’s largest diocese at the time stretching from the Humber in the north to the Thames in the south.

When King John placed his seal on Magna Carta at Runnymeade in 1215, a copy was brought back to Lincoln by then Bishop of Lincoln, Hugh of Wells, with the address ‘LINCOLNIA’ written on the back. Lincoln’s Magna Carta is still owned by Lincoln Cathedral and remains as one of four surviving copies of the document and it can be seen in Lincoln today.
